It is the band's debut studio album. It was recorded in just one week in August 1978 and compiled in three weeks. The Scream was an almost instant commercial hit, peaking at number 12 on the UK album charts. The album is considered a classic today; Uncut magazine rated it 43rd on their list of "The 100 Greatest Debut Albums".
