Beck's 1994 major-label debut Mellow Gold arrived just as alternative rock was hitting the mainstream, and quickly set him apart as one ofthe era's most original voices. Initially propelled by the unlikely success of "Loser" - a song built from surreal lyrics, slacker cool, and a Dr. John sample ("I Walk on Guilded Splinters") - the album went on to prove Beck was far more thana one-hit oddity. Produced by Beck alongside Tom Rothrock, Rob Schnapf, and Karl Stephenson, and mixed by Rothrock and Schnapf, Mellow Gold remains a sharp, genre-defying work that blends folk, hip hop, punk, and lo-fi textures into a unique sonic landscape.
