The third studio album by the American indie-folk band, Beirut, was originally released on August 30, 2011, and includes a digital album download coupon. Zach Condon created this album after a challenging tour in Brazil, where he endured a perforated eardrum and experienced a stage invasion. Unlike earlier Beirut albums, The Rip Tide offers a more personal reflection of places close to home, like the song "Santa Fe," which pays tribute to Condon's hometown. He shared that "The vagabond thing that was a teenage fantasy that I lived out in a big way. Music, to me, was escapism. And now I'm doing everything that is the opposite [of that] in my life. I'm married. I've got a house. I've got a dog. So it felt ridiculous, the narrative of what my career was supposed to be, compared to what I was actually trying to do in my life." Inspired by the recording process of For Emma, Forever Ago, Condon wrote The Rip Tide during six months of solitude in a winter cabin in Bethel, New York. Unlike previous Beirut albums, the music was created through the band playing together live, instead of recording individual tracks separately. However, Condon added the lyrics after all the music was completed.
