Heatmiser's Dead Air is a strong debut, though more credit goes to Neil Gust, ELLIOTT SMITH's co-singer/guitarist. The 1993 grunge influence is evident, but the focus is on tight, energetic songs with rough vocals akin to Hsker D and Mission of Burma, rather than Sabbath or Black Flag. Gust's anthems with emotional passion fit the Fugazi comparison. The 14 songs in 37 minutes avoid easy singalongs, favoring complex headbanging with heart.
