Completely Necessary (Anthology 1978-1982) is the first fully authorised and comprehensive collection documenting the short but remarkably fertile lifespan of The Necessaries, a New York band operating just outside any fixed category at the turn of the '80s. Drawing from punk urgency, art-rock experimentation, and sharply observed songwriting, the group existed in parallel with the downtown scene without ever settling comfortably inside it. Formed in 1978 from the remains of Harry Toledo & The Rockets, The Necessaries brought together an extraordinary rotating cast, including Ed Tomney, Jesse Chamberlain, Ernie Brooks, Arthur Russell and Randy Gun. Early support from John Cale led to their first single in 1979, after which the band signed to Sire Records. A series of missteps and unfinished releases followed, most notably the premature issue of Big Sky, later withdrawn and replaced by Event Horizon. Subsequent recordings remained unreleased until now. This anthology finally presents the band's work as it was intended. Spread across three LPs, the set opens with Event Horizon in its band-approved form, followed by Pilots Facing North, collecting studio recordings from 1978-1981, and Songs From The Blue Colony, which assembles the group's final, previously unheard sessions. Across 37 tracks - 28 of them previously unissued - the compilation reveals a band consistently ahead of its moment, bridging late-'70s punk, early alternative rock, and the emerging college-rock sensibility of the years that followed. The audio has been restored and mastered by Michael Graves at Osiris Studio, with detailed liner notes by Michael IQ Jones tracing the band's history and context. Both the vinyl and CD editions feature previously unseen photographs, completing the most accurate document of The Necessaries' recorded legacy to date.
