The recording took place largely in The Loft, Wilcos Chicago studio, and the process included internal tension, a changing drummer, and disputes over mixing and sequencing. Even before its retail release, the band streamed the album independently after being dropped by Reprise, eventually finding a home at Nonesuch Records.
